The Story of Fontaine…
The story behind Fontaine is a storied one in my family. Fontaine was the pseudonym used by my great-great-aunt Edna when she ran a successful high-end call girl service in San Francisco in the 1940s. When her sister - my great-grandmother - divorced her abusive, alcoholic first husband, Aunt Edna used the proceeds from that business to support her financially at a time when women were not expected to leave their marriages and could not count on receiving support if they did. It was no small thing.
After my grandmother was born, Edna continued to care for the family, helping to pay for her niece's education and clothing until her death in 1957.
Edna Fontaine was a woman ahead of her time: resourceful, defiant, generous, and impeccably dressed.
I named this brand for her - in honor of an infamous woman, who dared.
